Protection Against Malware, Spyware and Adware
We call it antivirus, but it is unlikely to be attacked by a real computer virus. Today’s malware is all about making money and there is no easy way to profit from spreading a virus. Modern antivirus programs deal with Trojans, rootkits, spyware, adware, ransomware, and more. As mentioned, Techinfoday has reviewed over 40 different commercial antivirus programs, not counting the many free antivirus tools. From this vast field, we have selected four Editors’ Choice products, some with four stars, others with 3.5 stars. If you have malware, one of the plants listed in this article should fix the problem.
These commercial products offer protection beyond the antivirus built into Windows 10. The best free antivirus programs also offer more than Windows. The combination of good lab values and an excellent result in our practical malware protection test was enough to earn 3.5 stars. Of course, it doesn’t appear in this roundup of commercial antivirus products.
Learn More About Antivirus Testing Labs
We take the results of independent antivirus testing labs very seriously. That a company’s product appears in the results is a kind of vote of confidence. This means that the lab thought the product was important and the company felt the cost of testing was worth it. Of course, high test scores are also important.
We follow four labs that regularly publish detailed reports: SE Labs, AV-Test Institute, MRG-Effitas, and AV-Comparatives. We have developed a system to aggregate your results and give you a score from 0 to 10.
We Test Defense Mechanisms Against Malware, Spyware and Adware
We also put each product through its own hands-on malware protection test and got an idea of how the product performs. Depending on how thoroughly the product prevents the installation of malware, you can earn up to 10 points for malware protection.
Our antimalware test inevitably uses the same patterns for months. To verify the handling of a new malware product, we tested each product against a large collection of brand-new malware hosting URLs provided by MRG-Effete and determined what percentage of them were blocked. The products are also known to prevent access to malicious URLs and remove malware during download.
Some products get good reviews from independent labs, but don’t do well in our field tests. In such cases, we refer to laboratories as they offer much more resources for your tests. You want to know more? Here is a detailed description of how we test security software.
Multi-Layer Malware Protection
Antivirus products excel at going beyond the basics of on-demand scanning and real-time malware protection. Some rank the URLs you visit or appear in search results using a red, yellow, and green color coding system. Some actively block your system processes from connecting to known malware hosting URLs or deceptive (phishing) websites.
The software contains bugs and sometimes these bugs affect your security. Cautious users keep Windows and all programs up to date and fix these errors as soon as possible. Vulnerability scanning, offered by some antivirus products, can verify that all required patches are in place and even apply missing patches.
Spyware comes in many forms, from hidden programs that record every keystroke you press to Trojans that pose as legitimate programs while decrypting your personal information. All antivirus programs deal with spyware and other types of malwares, but some contain special components to protect against spyware.
You expect an antivirus program to detect and remove the bad programs and leave the good programs alone. What about the unknowns, the shows that cannot be identified as good or bad? However, this is not always a pure blessing. It is not uncommon for behavior detection systems to detect many harmless behaviors performed by simple programs.
Safe listing is a different approach to the problem of unidentified programs. A secure list-based security system only runs known good programs. Strangers are prohibited. This style is not suitable for all conditions, but it can be useful
Firewalls, Ransomware Protection And More
Firewalls and spam do not use antivirus protection, but some of our products include them as a benefit. In fact, some of these antivirus products have more features than some products sold as protection.
Other features include secure browsing for business transactions, private file wiping, icon and computer history wiping, credit check, virtual keyboard to protect against keyloggers, cross-platform security, and more. But of course, we have already talked about gold, rapid tests and bleaching.
We see many antivirus products that add modules to protect against ransomware. Other things work by stopping unauthorized changes to corrupt files. Other troublemakers suggest malware. Others also need to be corrected. With the increase in this scourge, any extra protection is worth it.
Other Antivirus: VPN
Your proper antivirus works in the background to prevent any small risk of malware problems, but its power doesn’t extend beyond your computer. Going online confused puts your data at risk. Stick to HTTPS for websites whenever possible, but consider installing a VPN or virtual private network for complete privacy on the go. This feature is so important that you will see it as an additional feature in some antivirus programs.
What Is the Best Protection Against Malware?
Which antivirus to choose? You have so many options. Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus generally get full or complete results from their lab. With a subscription to McAfee Antivirus Plus, you can install security on all your Windows, Android, Mac OS, and iOS devices. Its scanning technology is based on unusual behaviors that make Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus a small antivirus on the market. We’ve mentioned these four publishers’ options for Antivirus Commercial, but they’re not the only product worth considering. Read our main review and make your own decision.
Editor’s note: We are aware that Kaspersky Lab has been accused of improper dealings with the Russian government. Until we see clear evidence of these allegations, we will treat them as unconstitutional, we will treat them as unfounded, and we will support the product. We support Kaspersky folders as long as they serve their purpose.
